Vicksburg Lament

The Yankees came and they set to siege
Grant and Sherman are beyond the trees
Lordy, lordy, look at what you’ve done
Take a good hard look at what we have become…

They cut the rails and they pinned us down
Gonna stave us out of “Prairie Dog Town”
Night and day now, the cannon balls a’ fly
Seems that here in Vicksburg we all are gonna die

The fever takes us one by one
No food to eat and no powder for the gun
There is no surrender for all the men they kill
They can break our bodies but never break our will

So turn to rubble and turn to dust
If you think destruction will ever gain our trust
Oh these scars are wounds that time will never heal
Cause a cog’s been busted up off the spinnin’ wheel

So for Vicksburg and for all you’ve done
Damn your fathers and curse your Northern sons
Let that mighty river rise and cover them in mud
And let the price of Vicksburg be paid in Yankee blood
